The Meaning of Catholicism

The term "Catholicism" stems from the Greek word "katholikos," meaning "universal" or "relating to the whole church." It refers to the Christian faith and tradition that recognizes the authority of the Pope and the bishops in communion with him.

Catholic Beliefs and Teachings

Catholicism is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ as interpreted through the lens of sacred scripture, tradition, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Central to Catholic beliefs are the following:

• The Trinity: God exists as three persons—the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.

• The Church: The Catholic Church is the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church founded by Jesus Christ.

The Catholic Church is a hierarchical institution with the Pope as its head. Bishops, priests, and deacons serve as ministers and shepherds of the faithful. The Church plays a vital role in the lives of Catholics, providing spiritual guidance, education, and support through its parishes, schools, and ministries.

Catholicism and Christianity

Catholicism is one of the largest branches of Christianity, alongside Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy. While sharing common Christian beliefs, such as the divinity of Jesus Christ and the importance of salvation, Catholicism differs from other Christian traditions in its emphasis on the authority of the Church and the role of sacraments.
