Emma Raducanu Wins US Open, Ending Britain's 44-Year Drought

Teen Sensation Makes History

Emma Raducanu, the 18-year-old British sensation, completed a dream run at the 2021 US Open by defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the final on Saturday. Raducanu became the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era, and the first British woman to win a major since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.

Raducanu's Dominant Performance

Raducanu, who entered the tournament ranked 150th in the world, played with remarkable poise and composure throughout the tournament. She didn't drop a single set in her 10 matches, including wins over world number 12 Belinda Bencic, 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, and 17-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

In the final, Raducanu controlled the match from the start, breaking Fernandez's serve twice in the first set and once in the second. Fernandez, who had upset three seeded players on her way to the final, fought back in the second set, but Raducanu remained unyielding, holding her nerve to close out the match in just under two hours.

Raducanu's victory is a major milestone for British tennis and a testament to her talent and hard work. She is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977, and her victory is sure to inspire a new generation of British players.
